A Note From Dr. Rind
In the late 80’s, I began to study osteopathic medicine. This became my passion and I’ve been working with it ever since. Osteopathy is based on the work and discoveries of Dr. Andrew Taylor Still. He was an MD who realized in the 1800s that the body has intelligence and the inherent capacity to heal itself, that it functions as a unit and that form and function are related. His work also evolved into what later became chiropractic as developed by DD Palmer. His ideas were considered strange and heretical. They included such unknown concepts as nutrition, exercise, as well as psychology and psychiatry —the mind affects the body and the body (chemistry, structure, etc.) affects the mind. His work also evolved into what today we recognize as physical therapy. He believed that women should be doctors. He functioned as if we are not just a body with a spirit, rather that we are a spirit with a body. He was ostracized by his medical colleagues for his strange medical ideas and in the late 1800s gave up his MD and called himself Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.). He set up a school and welcomed all who want to study with him. The longer I work with osteopathic medicine, the more I appreciate the depth of this healing science.
